In 2016, The Swinerton Foundation partnered with Oakland Unified School District (OUSD)’s Career Technical Trades and Apprenticeships department to develop a construction club at Oakland High School as part of our Adopt-a-School program. The program aims to improve vocational education in underserved schools and encourage youth to pursue careers in construction.

Held at Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton, California, the 2015 NorCal Swinvitational was a major success! With golf balls, drivers, and putters in hand, this year 150 participants from over 50 different companies took to the green, determined to swing their way into the first place spot. In addition to the 19-hole tournament, a Bocce ball game was held for participants as well.

Ten brave Swinerton employees from Orange County and Los Angeles recently set out to face their greatest challenge yet—a 75-story stair climb to the top of the US Bank Tower in downtown Los Angeles. Conquering each floor step-by-step (1,679 per floor), each climber gratifyingly made it to the top of the tower.

In honor of Leap’s 31st Annual Sandcastle Contest, Swinerton employees, volunteers, and community members took to San Francisco’s beautiful Ocean Beach to participate in the largest sandcastle competition in the state. Held each October, Leap’s largest fundraiser pairs architects, designers, engineers, and general contractors with elementary schools for a day of friendly competitive sandcastle building.

On December 18, volunteers celebrated the holidays at the 28th Annual Christmas Party of Parents of Watts, a community organization that provides a wide range of resources to local families. With a special focus on third-grade children and those with special needs, the party was held for 350 children who live and attend school in the Watts community in South-Central Los Angeles, which is surrounded by five housing projects. Parents of Watts is one of many Parent Training and Information Centers funded by the US Department of Education under the Individuals with Disabilities Act. The organization provides programs to improve the lives of families of children with disabilities by connecting families to needed support services and working to improve educational outcomes.

As we approach Thanksgiving and the winter holiday season, we are kicking the giving spirit into high gear with our Fall Giving Challenge! This year, Swinerton employees are engaging in a little friendly competition to see which office can collect the most points—earned through fundraising, donation of goods, and volunteer hours. The top three teams will choose a charitable organization to receive a check from The Swinerton Foundation.

This fall, The Swinerton Foundation held its biennial Swinvitational golf tournament in San Diego, welcoming 124 participants from 33 different companies. Because of the generosity of participants and sponsors, The Swinerton Foundation is able to donate money to the various charities and organizations it supports. In one of the most successful tournaments to date, the effort easily surpassed 2011’s fundraising totals and raised an estimated $85,000.
