In honor of Leap’s 31st Annual Sandcastle Contest, Swinerton employees, volunteers, and community members took to San Francisco’s beautiful Ocean Beach to participate in the largest sandcastle competition in the state. Held each October, Leap’s largest fundraiser pairs architects, designers, engineers, and general contractors with elementary schools for a day of friendly competitive sandcastle building.

Joined by family members and friends, this year we teamed up with Levy Design Partners, ZFA Structural Engineers, and fourth graders from Sunnyside Elementary, to form Team Sunnyside Ups.  Keeping in this year’s 2014 theme of “Food, Glorious Food,” Team Sunnyside Ups sculpted a one of a kind beach front magical food truck. The farm-to-vendor food truck included students planting the site with fruits and veggies to be used to create some staple kid food favorites including pot stickers, pizza, hamburgers, and banana splits. Wearing apron inspired t-shirts, students took turns serving their favorite foods to contest attendees from their truck.

For over three decades Leap has provided arts education for schools unable to offer art programs directly to their students. The Swinerton Foundation donated materials and funds to support Team Sunnyside Ups helping to continue Leap’s mission in keeping the arts alive in Bay Area schools.

From magical food trucks to giant lobsters, ice cream cones, and Candyland sculptures, over 30 public elementary schools participated helping make this year’s contest a major success!
